Requirements:

Academic Background

You must have a first degree in any field or proof of continuous academic study that shows you can fulfill the requirements of the diploma in order to be eligible for this course.

Although not a must, it is highly advised to have a foundational TESOL certification, such as the Trinity CertTESOL or Cambridge CELTA.

Teaching Experience:

You must have been a full-time ESOL teacher for two years at the time of the interview. This is usually understood to mean working at least 15 hours a week for 32 weeks of the year, or 960 hours total. Teaching in a classroom must take up 75% of these hours.

You can teach in any setting, whether in person or virtually, and with any age group.

The two-year requirement still remains, however candidates with part-time teaching experience may still be taken into consideration provided they have accrued at least 960 hours over a longer time frame. It is crucial to remember that teaching 960 hours in less than two years will not allow you to meet this criterion.

You should not have taken a break from ESOL teaching for more than a year prior to your interview.

English Proficiency
Due to the course’s rigorous nature, applicants are expected to have a C2 level of English proficiency. You do not need to provide a formal certification to demonstrate your English level.

However, the table below outlines the scores required to reach a C2 level on various English exams:

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: Grade A, with no less than 200 in any paper

  • Cambridge C2 Proficiency: Grade A, B, or C, with no less than 200 in any paper

  • IELTS: Overall band score of 8.5, with no less than 8.0 in any skill

  • TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 115, with no less than 27 in any skill

Your English proficiency will be assessed as part of the application process.

The Course:

There are two ways you can take the Trinity DipTESOL course from anywhere in the world:

Blended Open

Study Phase: Online

Teaching Practice: Face-to-face in Italy or Spain

Fully Online Option

Study Phase: Online

Teaching Practice: Online

The Study Phase:

Together with other applicants and our tutoring staff, you will participate in a six-month online training program. Since the majority of the work is asynchronous, you can log in and finish assignments whenever it's convenient for you each day of the week.

During this period, you’ll work through 18 week-long modules (with some rest weeks in between), guided by different tutors based on their expertise (e.g., Phonology, Lexis, etc.).

For Each Module You Will:

  • Read journal articles and watch instructional videos

  • Collaborate with peers in the Moodle forum

  • Attend a 45-minute live Zoom lesson (recordings available if you can’t attend)

  • Complete assignments with feedback from tutors, graded according to Trinity’s criteria to track your progress

In total, you’ll spend around 300 hours on online study and support during this phase (approximately 50 hours per month). Start dates are available in January, April, or October.

What will you learn in the Study Phase:

Our training is made to be active and useful, and it is customized to each participant's needs. Tasks that push you to use novel concepts in your own educational environment will be assigned to you.

The online courses, which are taught by a group of highly skilled and knowledgeable teachers, will help you improve your theoretical understanding and practical abilities while getting you ready for the four Trinity tests (see "What is the assessment phase like?").

Assessment:

After successfully completing the study phase, you can register for the Trinity assessments (Units 1–4):

  • Unit 1: Written Paper (taken in-person at any institution)

  • Unit 2: The Portfolio (completed online)

  • Unit 3: Phonology Interview (conducted online)

  • Unit 4: Teaching Practice (can be done either online or face-to-face)

You can complete the assessments in any order and at your own pace:

  • Minimum time frame: 1 year (6 months for the study phase + 6 months for the Trinity assessments)

  • Maximum time frame: 3 years (6 months for the study phase + up to 2.5 years to complete the Trinity assessments)

Teaching Practice:

There are several ways that you can complete the teaching practice (unit 4):

Teach Your Own Students:

Online: Via Zoom

Face to Face/Remote: Teach remotely your own face to face class and live stream it on Zoom.

Supplied Students:

Online: Via Zoom

Face to Face/Remote: Teach students face to face in Italy or Spain

You will have access to live tutor support, including lesson plan discussions and post-lesson feedback, regardless of the option you choose. We provide a variety of date alternatives for both full-time and part-time programs.

Completing Units 3 and 4 together is required. Candidates must register for both Unit 3 (the phonological interview) and Unit 4 (the teaching practice) simultaneously because both units have a live examiner. It is not possible to sign up for them separately.

For full-time students, the teaching practice lasts four weeks, whereas for part-time students, it lasts fourteen weeks. Every day throughout this period, you will either instruct or observe another educator. During the last week, the phonology interview will take place.

What is the schedule like for the full-time option?

The four-week full-time program is Monday through Friday. With a burden of 40–50 hours each week, it is extremely demanding. It's critical to free your schedule because of the program's intensive nature. Candidates with other commitments during this period are less likely to pass their assessments.

Course content

Through its validation and annual inspection process, Trinity College London ensures that all DipTESOL courses follow the same mandatory components:

  • Language: candidates must show understanding of the language systems and language-related issues as commonly taught in beginner to advanced syllabuses.

  • Learning and Teaching: candidates must show an understanding of the current principles and practices of language learning and teaching and show an ability to demonstrate these in the classroom.

  • Professional Development: candidates must demonstrate knowledge of the principles and procedures facilitating personal and professional development.

Candidates are examined according to the following four units. Some components are externally assessed by Trinity's panel of examiners, others are internally assessed by the course provider and externally moderated by Trinity.

Unit 1: Three-hour Written Paper. This has three sections – a short answer section on language topics and two essay sections on 'learning and teaching' and 'professional development'. It is externally assessed and there are three set examination dates per year. Please download the DipTESOL Unit 1 sample examination paper to get an idea of what to expect.

Unit 2: Coursework Portfolio. This is a compilation of three assignments, firmly rooted in classroom practice. Section one is based around a self-designed classroom observation instrument, section two is a developmental record of the candidate's own teaching and section three is an independent research project. The portfolio is internally assessed and externally moderated.

Unit 3: the Interview. This is an externally assessed 30-minute interview designed to give the candidate the opportunity to describe, illustrate and evaluate their understanding and application of phonological theory in the classroom and includes a prepared talk and a phonemic transcription exercise.

Unit 4: Classroom Teaching. Candidates complete four hours of internally assessed teaching practice and one hour that is externally assessed. In addition, candidates complete a self-reflection teaching practice journal.

  • Units 2, 3 and 4 are usually taken together in the first instance and candidates have up to three years to complete any failed units or parts of units. The syllabus places a strong emphasis on the application of theory in the classroom and also on teachers reflecting on and evaluating their own practice.
